Let's get technical.
01-Your CTA isn't clear.
Your visitor shouldn't have to figure out what to do. Compare: Learn More with: Request a Quote
The second tells the visitor exactly what happens next. For service businesses, your primary CTA should correspond to the action you actually want.
02 — Your conversion path has too much friction.
Imagine:
Homepage
↓
Services
↓
About
↓
Contact
↓
Form
↓
Submit
That's already several decisions.
And if the contact page asks:
Name
Email
Phone
Company
Address
Budget
Industry
14-question description
How did you hear about us?
...you've just created a job application. Only ask for information you actually need at that stage.
03 — Your page loads slowly
Large unoptimised images, unnecessary scripts, third-party embeds and excessive animations can increase page weight and slow down the experience. Google's Core Web Vitals focus on three major areas:
LCP
Largest Contentful Paint
How quickly the main content becomes visible.
INP
Interaction to Next Paint
How responsive the page feels when someone interacts with it.
CLS
Cumulative Layout Shift
How much the layout unexpectedly moves around while loading. A beautiful animation isn't useful if the visitor is waiting for the page to become usable.
04 — Your mobile experience isn't actually good
Responsive doesn't mean:
"It technically fits on an iPhone."
Look at: Typography, Spacing, Navigation, Buttons, Forms, Images, Section order.
Something that works beautifully at 1440px can become frustrating at 390px. And mobile visitors may represent a significant portion of your traffic depending on your audience.
05 — Your SEO brings the wrong people
You can technically rank for keywords and still generate zero enquiries.
For example: "What is a frameless glass balustrade?" might generate informational traffic. But: "frameless glass balustrades Durban" has much stronger commercial intent for a local installer.
Your SEO needs to connect: Search intent → Page → Offer → CTA Not simply: Keyword → Traffic
06 — Your landing page doesn't match the promise
Imagine your ad says: Get a Free Website Consultation. Someone clicks.
And lands on: "Welcome to ABC Digital. We offer websites, branding, marketing, consulting, social media, SEO, photography, printing..."
What happened? The visitor expected one thing and got twelve. That's a message match problem. Your landing page should reinforce the reason they clicked.
07 — Your forms might be the problem
This one is easy to overlook.
Check:
Is the form actually submitting?
Are emails reaching you?
Is the confirmation message working?
Does it work on mobile?
Are required fields clearly marked?
Is the submit button obvious?
Does the user know what happens after submitting?
Your conversion doesn't end when someone clicks Submit. It ends when the next step is clear.
08 — You're not measuring what happens
This is where your Analytics setup comes in. You want to know:
Where did they come from?
Which page did they visit?
How long did they stay?
Did they click your CTA?
Did they start your form?
Did they submit it?
Traffic alone isn't the goal. A website receiving 5,000 visitors and zero enquiries has a very different problem from one receiving 300 visitors and 15 enquiries.
09 — Your trust signals aren't where people need them
Testimonials hidden on an About page aren't necessarily helping someone who is deciding whether to enquire on your Services page.
Think: Proof → close to decision point
Testimonials. Reviews. Case studies. Client logos. Results. Credentials. Clear contact details.
10 — Your website isn't answering the buying questions
Before someone enquires, they're probably wondering:
Is this for someone like me? What exactly do they offer? How much does this roughly cost? Can I trust them? What happens if I contact them? What makes them different?
If your website doesn't answer those questions, your visitor may leave and find someone who does.
The technical takeaway:
Your website isn't a poster. It's a system.

If one part breaks, the whole journey can suffer. And that's why I don't look at a website purely from a design perspective.
